How to Be a Successful Law Student Blogger
From Letters of Marque:
Now, let’s suppose that you’re a law student, and you have a blog. And you want all your classmates to know about it. How can you assure yourself that people will find out about it? There are some obvious ways that you can let others know — send e-mails about it, post comments with links to your blog and so forth. But can you be even sneakier?
This post explains how you can let your classmates know that you have a blog in a somewhat sneakier fashion.
- Casually mention the existence of your blog to classmates who have blogs. Wait until they link to your blog. Watch your readership soar.
- Link to your classmate’s blogs. Many of them look at referral logs or Technorati, which tracks what blogs link where. Think your blog is too small to show up? Never fear; it probably isn’t. Most blogs, no matter how small, show up on Technorati. A few discreet — or not so discreet — links here or there will surely let other bloggers know you have a blog.
- So you don’t want to actually link to other bloggers. That’s okay; you don’t need to! If you want to publicize your blog, all you need to do is post on your blog in class. Everyone sitting to either side of you, and behind you, will see what you’re doing! They will IM their friends with the URL, and your sneaky plan will pay off: despite making no efforts to publicize your blog, you’ll have immediate readership.
- Check your blog from a public law school computer, and don’t close the browser when you leave.
Now, you may be thinking to yourself: “Only tools publicize their blogs! I would be really humiliated if the law school class in general found out about my blog, which is intended for me and a few close friends only.” In that case, you should consider this post to be negative advice: if you don’t want to be found, make sure you don’t link to anyone, and they don’t link to you, and you don’t post or view your blog where others can see what you’re doing.Got it?
Good.
