Don't feel too badly. We did read the guide, followed the aforementioned instructions and still have irreparably scratched copies of two newly released games, so apparently moving the console is not always the reason for the game scratching. Our system was horizontal on a stable surface at the time the scratches occurred and had not been moved from that position for over a year before. When we contacted MS, they did offer to replace the games, but they would not fix the console since it was "out of warranty". For those who didn't know, the three-year extension applies only to the red rings of death and no other issues with the system. Microsoft wants $99 to repair the problem that they insist doesn't exist with their product. Lovely.

I have just recently suffered from this, "issue," myself. While I am upset, I can hardly blame microsoft. That is because in the Volume 1: Setup Manual, (that ships with the Xbox 360) on page 11, it explicitly states:

Important
To avoid jamming the DVD drive and damaging discs or the Xbox 360 console:
• Remove discs before moving the console or
tilting it between the horizontal and
vertical positions.
• Never use cracked discs. They can shatter
inside the console and jam or break
internal parts.
• When the console is vertical, do not use
discs that are smaller than standard DVDs
and CDs.

Which sadly I, and most other users, never read, but were forewarned.
